New York
New York, The Empire State
New York has the nation’s largest city, but as of 2019 the state also leads the nation in the number of people it has lost since the previous year.
While an estimated 76,790 fewer people in the state has may be a drop in the bucket when you’re talking about 19.5 million overall, a lot of those losses are coming from rural counties. In a 2016 census estimate, none of the 24 rural counties had a positive growth rate from 2010. Over that 6 year period they combined for a loss of 41,000 people. So it’s very likely that a dive into those numbers will show rural decline continuing or accelerating.
Rural counties in southern & western parts of the state were affected the hardest.

Lost Americana is about telling the stories of the people who live in rural America.
•Have you lived in the same rural area since the 1970/80s?
•Were you the last class to graduate from a rural school before it closed its doors forever?
•Do you know of a small town (under 2,000 people) that is a shell of it’s former self?
•Do you just what to give me some feedback on the topics we cover?
